New Venture — Commercial Truck Insurance Pennsylvania
If you are a new venture, regrettably, you will not qualify for the most competitive pricing for Commercial Trucking Insurance for the following reason:
- Lack of a verifiable insurance track record to determine how you will operate.
Pennsylvania trucking insurance companies take the same approach as an insurer offering auto and homeowners’ insurance — they look at statistics, and historical claims paid.
Statistically, a new venture has the potential to become relatively unprofitable to the insurer.
For this reason, you will find few carriers willing to write a policy for new ventures. However, we at Pathway can help you find the insurance that you need.
Let us review a theoretical claims example from a new venture we will call Lucky Lou Owner Operator Inc.
Example: Lucky Lou has worked as a long-haul truck driver for the last five years for a national company, and he decides he wants to venture out under his own authority and has aspirations to add drivers and trucks.
He finds a truck to lease that is within his budget, and before signing the lease paperwork, he needs to find commercial truck insurance, so he begins to call around.
Lucky Lou speaks with ABC trucking insurance company, and they promise to get back to Lucky Lou the next day with quotes.
Next, he calls XYZ insurance agency, and they promise the same thing, they will have quotes tomorrow.
Lou calls another company named The We Do It Right Trucking Insurance Agency, Inc. They give him a price quote over the phone, and it seems like it is way out in left field to Lou. The down payment was $2,950, and the monthly was $987 per month.
Lou tells the agent: “that price seems high.” The agent named Jack takes a few minutes to explain why pricing is more for new venture truckers. Jack tells Lou that he’s been selling trucking insurance for many years, and he guarantees Lou this will be the best price he will find because he’s a new venture.
Lou thinks the agent is trying to rip him off, so he rudely hangs the phone up on Jack.
Lou calls another four agents and can’t seem to get anybody to answer the telephone or give him a quote other than the agent from The We Do It Right Trucking Insurance Agency, Inc. that he hung the phone up on.
The next day arrives and comes without a phone call, text or email from any agents he called.
The next day, Lou is getting a bit antsy — agents are not calling him back as they promised.
On the third day, at around 9:00 am, Lou calls the first agency, ABC trucking, and needs to leave a message because no one answers the phone. Lou next calls XYZ insurance, and the agent he had spoken to is out sick. Lou asks if anyone else can help him with his quotes, and he’s told that the agent he has spoken with is the only person who handles trucking at the office.
Lou leaves messages with the other four agents and starts to wonder if he can even get an insurance quote.
Eight days later, the sick agent from XYZ insurance finally calls Lou back, apologizing profusely, and tells him he’s got good news.
“Ok, Lou, this is your lucky day, my friend. I can get a policy started for you today, the down payment is $7,857, and your monthly will be $3,972. Did you want to swing by my office with a check, or would you prefer a credit card payment?”
Lou doesn’t even know what to say, the other agent whom he had rudely hung up the phone on told Lou the price he gave him would be the best price he would be able to find.
Sure enough, Jack over at The We Do It Right Trucking Insurance Agency, Inc. was right as Lou would discover over the next three days as agents slowly began to call him back to let him know their prices for Pennsylvania Truck Insurance.
Lou decides to eat some humble pie and calls Jack to start up his insurance policy and apologize, making an excuse he got disconnected by accident.
Lou makes his down payment on the insurance and picks up his newly leased truck the next day.
Three weeks later, all of his paperwork is in order, and his MC authority is active, and Lou is ready to start making money.
The very first load Lou picks up is to be delivered to Atlanta. Twenty-five miles outside of Atlanta at 2:00 am, Lou falls asleep for only a moment as he is driving his truck, and he wipes out a minivan of travelers heading south on vacation.
Lou made his initial down payment of $2,950, and before he even made his first monthly payment, Lou’s insurance company paid a $1 million claim because of the accident Lou caused.
The insurance company collected less than $3,000 and paid out over $1 million, including defense costs for Lou.
While it is true, a claim like this could happen to even a seasoned trucker with years of insurance. There is a good reason why Pennsylvania trucking insurance companies do not offer the same premium rates for someone with a good claim track record versus a new venture with no track record.
